You, Too, Can Build A Web site!
Need to build a Web site but you’re “HTML-challenged?” Not to worry – it’s remarkably easy to build a good site these days for free or very (very) little money. Block off an afternoon, and you can get your site set up and started in just a few hours with these steps:
- Do a Google search for “free Web site design.” You’ll get millions of results, but on the first page should give you links to popular, reputable companies which allow you to build sites such as Google, GoDaddy, and Yahoo.
- Visit a handful of these sites, and look for:
- Ease of use. Does their site make sense to you? Does it look as though it would be pretty easy to get an account and build a site with them? Does it look as though they have customer support via phone, chat, or email?
- Visual appeal. Look at their free templates. See one you like?
- Flexibility. Would you be able to customize your site with this company? Would you be able to easily add your own photos, background, or banners?
- Price. The company you choose will be able to host your Website, usually free of charge—but “free” can come with a catch. A free site may include advertising over which you may have no control. A free site may also limit the number of pages your site may have. Finally, a free site will probably include a URL with their name in it, too, e.g.: www.yahoosites.com/sshs-everywhere (see below for how to avoid this!). Be sure you’re comfortable with any costs!
- If you’d like to get a URL (a.k.a. domain name), that’s all yours, it’s easy! Your Web hosting site may be able to help you register your name for a small annual fee. If not, you can do this through an independent company. Just do a Google search for “domain name registration.” There are benefits to having your own domain, too:
- It’s easier for people to remember.
- It looks better on your printed materials.
- If you ever move your Web site to a different hosting company, you can take your name with you.
In our next post, we’ll share an easy alternative to a traditional Web site – a blog!

Teens and Adults Talk About Depression Differently on Facebook
Here’s a fascinating new infographic that’s of value to SS/HS grantees in a number of ways: http://www.helpfordepression.com/facebook-depression.
First, the infographic analyzes Facebook posts for signs of depression between teens and adults. This makes it a great kind of audience research tool as we look for words around this topic which these audiences use. It assesses the kind of language used by people with more Facebook friends vs. those with fewer online friends. It’s fascinating – and again, tells us a lot about the kind of language used by those who may be struggling.
It explores the time of day when more messages of depression tend to be posted. If we wish to deliver our messages of hope to those who may be struggling, this kind of information can help us time those messages so they are more likely to be seen by the audiences we wish to reach. When it comes to delivering messages, timing matters!
Finally, it’s an excellent example of an infographic. It’s easy to follow, and visually interesting.
Take a look at this infographic, and let us know what you think.
